YOUR PADDLE BUYING GUIDE

How to choose a pickleball paddle

Start with fit and feel. Then use weight, shape, thickness and materials to decide which paddles to try.

1

Choose a shape

A wider face offers more hitting area; an elongated paddle adds reach. Compare both shapes during a demo to see which fits your contact point.

2

Find a manageable weight

Lighter paddles can be easier to maneuver. More weight can add stability, but the feel also depends on where that weight sits. Compare listed weight ranges and try the paddle in your hand.

3

Compare core thickness

Thicker cores often emphasize touch, while thinner cores can feel livelier. Construction changes the response, so thickness alone does not predict how a paddle will play.

4

Check the handle and grip

Handle length and grip circumference are different measurements. Try the grip for a comfortable hold; check for enough handle space if you use a two-handed backhand.

5

Understand the face and core

Read the manufacturer’s material descriptions, but use a demo to judge feel. A material label alone does not establish spin, power or durability.

6

Check competition eligibility

Before tournament play, check the exact model and variant against the current equipment list required by your event. Manufacturer claims and older approvals may not reflect current eligibility.

A simple demo checklist

Try dinks, blocks, drives and serves. Notice grip fit, how easily you move the paddle, and whether the response feels predictable. Compare a few candidates within your budget.
