START WITH THE ESSENTIALS

Pickleball rules, without the overload

Serve and return

Serve diagonally into the opposite service court. A serve touching the kitchen line is a fault. After the serve, the return must bounce; the serving team must also let that return bounce before volleying.

The kitchen

You may enter the non-volley zone to play a bounced ball. You cannot volley while touching it or its lines, or let volley momentum carry you into it.

Traditional scoring

Only the serving side earns points. Doubles scores name the serving score, receiving score and server number. A game starts at 0–0–2; the starting team gets one server before the first side-out. Later service turns allow both partners to serve.

Finish the game

Common targets are 11, 15 or 21, with a two-point winning margin. Singles uses two-number scoring. Agree on the format before starting.

Practice keeping score →

SMALL SESSIONS. USEFUL PROGRESS.

A simple practice plan

1. Serve and recover · 5 minutes

Pick a generous target in the service box. Hit ten serves without chasing speed. Note how many land in your target, then repeat while finishing balanced and ready for the return.

2. Cooperative dinks · 5 minutes

Work with a partner to keep a soft exchange going. Start straight ahead, then try crosscourt. Count consecutive controlled contacts rather than winners.

3. Drop, pause, advance · 5 minutes

Have a partner feed from the kitchen while you start farther back. Try a soft drop, pause in balance as the partner contacts the ball, and advance only when the next shot allows it.

4. Reset under gentle pressure · 5 minutes

Ask your partner to increase pace gradually. Use a compact block to send a manageable ball back. Lower the pace when technique breaks down, then build again.

Finish with a short game. Choose one practice goal and judge it by repeatable decisions—not just the final score.

Play better doubles together

Talk about middle balls before the game. Move with your partner, avoid leaving a large gap, and choose patient shots when you are off balance. After an error, reset and agree on the next useful adjustment.

In rotating-partner sessions, introduce yourself, check the scoring format and help newer players follow the serving sequence.

Before your first open-play session

What should I bring?

A paddle, suitable court shoes, water and the ball type requested by the organizer. Ask about fees, arrival time and paddle rotation before you go.

How do I choose a beginner-friendly session?

Look for the beginner-friendly label and any listed skill range. Read the organizer’s notes. If you are unsure, contact the organizer rather than assuming every drop-in group offers instruction.

How do I choose a paddle?

Start with grip fit and comfortable handling, then compare dimensions and core thickness. Use our advisor to make a shortlist, and try a few models when possible.

Does joining guarantee a place?

An accepted RSVP reserves a place in the app. A waitlist entry does not. Check the organizer’s venue arrangements; an app RSVP is not a court booking.
